Measles and Whooping Cough Are Back Because We Lost Herd Immunity

Vaccination rates dropped below 95%, so diseases we nearly eliminated are hospitalizing kids again.

American children are getting seriously sick from diseases that were nearly extinct. Measles cases hit 1,983 in 2026, up from almost zero just years ago. Whooping cough jumped from 3,000 cases in 2022 to 28,000 in 2025. Rotavirus is sending kids to the hospital for days instead of hours. The math is brutal: we need 95% vaccination rates for herd immunity, but we're sitting at 90% for measles and 70% for the full vaccine series.

Doctors are watching children stop breathing from whooping cough fits and dealing with measles cases for the first time in decades. Some pediatricians who saw maybe five rotavirus cases in ten years are now seeing that many in a single year. The unvaccinated kids aren't just getting mildly sick—they're requiring spinal taps, longer hospital stays, and intensive monitoring. Meanwhile, immunocompromised children who can't get vaccinated are getting infected by unvaccinated classmates.

This isn't theoretical anymore. When vaccination rates slip below the herd immunity threshold, these diseases come roaring back fast. Measles is often the canary in the coal mine because it's so contagious—one infected person can spread it to 12-18 others. The solution remains straightforward: getting community vaccination rates back above 95% creates a protective barrier for everyone, especially kids whose immune systems can't handle vaccines.

What You Can Actually Do Today

  • Check your family's vaccination records against the CDC schedule—many adults are missing boosters for tetanus or whooping cough
  • If your child attends daycare or school, ask about their vaccination rate policies and current community rates
  • Schedule catch-up vaccines if anyone in your household is behind—most insurance covers recommended vaccines completely

Consult your doctor about vaccine timing if you have immune system concerns or chronic conditions.
